Preparing a funeral program Order of Service is fairly simple once you have the layout of the service or ceremony. In most cases if the decease was a member of a church then the Pastor of the church would supply the Order of Service. Organ Prelude: the Organ Prelude is the music played by the organist prior to the funeral services beginning. If there is no organist available you can change this line item to Musical Selection and list the name of the song or selection.
Processional: the processional is generally handled by the Clergy, Pastor and Funeral Directors. At this point the clergy will proceed down the center aisle in front of the casket reading scriptures from the bible.
Prayer: the prayer will be appointed by the pastor or ministers of the church. If there are no ministers available you can appoint someone from the family to pray the introductory prayer.
Hymn of Comfort: the hymn of comfort can be selected from the church hymnal or you may substitute with a suitable music selection. This song is generally sang by all who attend the funeral.
Scripture Reading: the scripture reading is generally taken from the Old and New Testaments for Christian or Religious funerals.
Selection or Musical Selection: at this point a musical selection or solo can be rendered to keep the flow of the service going. Funeral services can be tough on the family but the music can assist in the healing process at that time.
Acknowledgments, Cards & Condolences: this section of the Order of Service is generally handled by a good reader as they will be reading all the cards and condolences. Here you can also acknowledge any special visitors or special helpers that may have assisted in their well being before they passed.
Obituary Reading: the obituary is read by a family member, relative or friend. You may also elect to silently read the obituary.
Selection or Musical Selection: at this point a musical selection or solo can be rendered to keep the flow of the service going. Funeral services can be tough on the family but the music can assist in the healing process at that time.
Eulogy: the pastor of the decease will perform the eulogy. If the decease did not have a church home you may select a family member to compose and read the eulogy.
Final Viewing: the funeral director in charge will then direct the family and funeral attendees to view the remains for one last time. The final viewing can also be placed at the beginning of the service to relieve the family from a final viewing. The idea is that the end of the service should go smoothly and opening the casket may not be the best idea. Again, you must use some wisdom at this point of the service.
Benediction: the officiator of the service should handle the benediction or closing prayer. This is the official ending of the service and all funeral attendees will convene at the committal service.
Recessional: the clergy, ministers and funeral directors will proceed out of the church reading the scriptures as they did when they entered the funeral service. The casket will be placed back into the hearse to be driven to the committal service.
The Interment is the final resting place of the decease known as the cemetery.
